The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) is among 13 agencies around the state that will share $11 million in federal stimulus funds designed to train people for jobs in growing industries, and the program is set to begin Feb. 1.
LACCD received $1 million through the governor’s California Recovery Task Force, and will use that money to train 220 unemployed individuals for jobs in the transportation and logistics industry as part of the Southern California Transportation and Logistic Initiative.
This includes training individuals as auto technicians to work with hybrid technologies at companies like the Metropolitan Transit Authority, The Big Blue Bus, the North Orange County Transit District and private employers.
Some program participants will also be trained in transportation management and as environmental technicians.
Training will be provided at five of the district’s colleges—Los Angeles Trade Tech, Los Angeles Valley College, Los Angeles Pierce College, Los Angeles Harbor College and East Los Angeles College—and potential students will be screened by personnel in one of the local One-Stop/WorkSource Centers.
The positions are permanent, typically pay union wages and offer upward mobility.
