With the budget cuts taking a hit on many programs in California, the City of Inglewood cancelled its fireworks display this year. While for many residents the July 4th weekend was filled with celebrations, there were two major incidents that resulted in arrests and loss of property.

On Sunday, July 4, 2010, at approximately 11:40 PM, Inglewood Police officers were dispatched to the 1000 Block Walnut Street in response to call of several subjects fighting. Arriving officers observed the fight in progress and were subsequently contacted by a citizen, who advised them that a family member has been assaulted by one of the subjects. The citizen identified the subject and directed the officers to him.

As officers attempted to intervene in the fight and approach the suspect involved in the assault, they were physically attacked by involved parties. One officer was punched in the face by a subject and then attacked from behind by a second subject that placed the officer in a choke hold. As the officers attempted to gain control, they were attacked by family members of the involved subjects.

Officers broadcasted a call for help and a request for additional officers was made to neighboring agencies. Responding officers were able to dispense the crowd without further incident.

Four Inglewood Police Officers were transported to a local hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the incident. The injuries in the assault ranged from minor scratches to a sprain thumb, a broken hand and a major shoulder injury. All but one of the involved officers will be off work for an undetermined period pending recuperation.

Three suspects were arrested at the time of the incident and treated at a local hospital for injuries sustained in the fight and while being taken into custody. A fourth suspect was inadvertently released at the time of the incident, however has since been arrested when he attempted too visit the first three subjects in the Inglewood Police Jail. The subjects identified as follows:

1) Alfonso Verastegui Inglewood resident 29 years old
2) Rafael Alonzo Gutierrez Inglewood resident 24 years old
3) Rafael Gonzallez Gutierrez La Mirada resident 53 years old
4) Christian Gutierrez La Mirada resident 20 years old

The individuals are being held in the Inglewood jail on charges of assaulting police officers, interfering/resisting arrest and being drunk in public. The case will be submitted to the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office for review and formal charges.

The investigation into this matter is ongoing. The Inglewood Police Department is seeking the public's help. Anyone with information about the assault is requested to contact the Office of Criminal Investigations, Assault Section at 310-412-5247 or the 24-hour anonymous hotline number at “888-41-CRIME” (888-412-7463

An Inglewood firefighter confirmed that fireworks were the cause of a fire that destroyed a back house on an Inglewood lot.

A Los Angeles County dispatcher stated that the fireworks landed on the attached garage of a home at Beach Street and West 64th Place. The illegal fireworks started a fire about 11:10 p.m. on Saturday. Five stations responded to the call and the L.A. County fire crews put out the blaze in about 15 minutes. The garage had an attached built on living area. Two people were living inside the structure, but there were no reports of injuries.
