Opening Ceremonies included a special presentation to the Inglewood NAACP ACT-SO participants. The ACT-SO (Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics) is a yearlong enrichment program designed to recruit, stimulate, and encourage high academic and cultural achievement among African-American and other minority high school students. The program relies on the dedication and commitment of community, business leaders and celebrities who volunteer as mentors and coaches to promote academic and artistic excellence. Mitchell Williams is the branch president and a dedicated youth mentor along with Dr. Melanie Andrews, Leontyne Reemer, parents and others in the community.
The Inglewood team of youth will be proceeding to Kansas for another level of competition. These outstanding students are Princeton Parker, Stephanie Beenel, Kambria Ruffin and Lindsay White. In addition to accepting the recognition from the Council, the Inglewood Branch also made a plea for additional funds for travel expenses. Waste Management’s Director of Operations (Los Angeles South Market Area) is Darrell Kates and he immediately offered to donate $1,000 to the ACT-SO youth team.
Councilwoman Dunlap did provide an explanation for not sitting in on the prior two council meetings. Inquiries had been made to Inglewood Today, when a concerned Inglewood resident questioned whether Dunlap would be compensated if she is not making a full commitment. It appeared that Dunlap was available for photo opportunities only and not the entire meetings, however, she confirmed that she had been ill.
Prior to specifics regarding the agenda items and at the conclusion of the meeting, the public expressed concerns regarding, payment of the bills, charter, revisions, access to agenda reports and an appointment of a Library commissioner. There is also a noticeable shifting from the public regarding the utilizing of consultants. One week there is an outcry for utilizing in-house skilled persons and other times people speak against bringing in local people and request knowledgeable consultants be contracted.
Public comment also included Councilmember Tabor’s assistant, Creashia Davis. She offered a rebuttal to an accusation of having “harassed” Willie Agee, an Inglewood Commissioner during the Juneteenth event.
Creshia stated that Agee drove around 3 times and did not drop off seniors right away. “I was concerned for the safety of the event participants, especially the children, when I asked Mr. Agee to park his car.” She also said that other carts were available for transporting event attendees.
Franklin reminded council attendee that the City had spent thousands of dollars to preserve the ceiling. The Veteran's Memorial and the Centinela Adobe Complex building are both historical venues in Inglewood. The Council agreed on a motion to hire a preservationist and an architectural firm for both the Veterans Building and the Centinela Adobe. The staff stated that they will consult and refer with the Historical Society on this project. A major agenda item pertained to a staff report requesting direction be given to staff regarding the preparation of an Exclusive Negotiation Agreement (ENA) between the Inglewood Redevelopment Agency and the Haagen Company, LLC modifying earlier ENA's by expanding the area to include privately held parcel and Agency-owned land located at 4000-4046 West Century Boulevard, 10117 S. Prairie Avenue and a portion of 101st Street located within the Merged Inglewood Redevelopment Project Area to develop a commercial retail shopping center.
The council’s action on this matter resulted in an approval with the motion to enter into a 180 ENA with the option to extend the negotiation period by (2) 90 day extensions.
A public hearing to consider the approval of the Inglewood Housing Authority's
Annual Plan for the 2010-2011 fiscal year was held and passionate comments from the public and the dais were expressed. With the escalating interest in this matter it has been continued to July 13, 2010.
Another hot agenda item regarding the transit sites under consideration by the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority for the proposed Crenshaw/LAX Transit Corridor was pulled.
