Mayor Ron Dellums hosted Oakland’s first Peace Conference on Tuesday in an effort to bring together the interfaith community to address solutions to youth violence. The conference was held at the Claremont Hotel.
“As we honor local religious leaders who have made a significant contribution to our community, we are asking them to bring their collective wisdom, their innovation and their current best practices to the table in order to build a lasting foundation for creating a brighter future for the youth of Oakland and bringing peace to our streets,” said Dellums.
Oakland Police Chief Anthony Batts spoke during the conference about one of the department’s mentoring programs. Keynote speaker Gail Brewster Bereola highlighted one of the city’s key Measure Y programs, Restorative Justice for Oakland Youth.
After a lineup of morning speakers, participants attended workshop sessions on topics including juvenile probation, youth outreach and green jobs, and personal safety for faith-based organizations.
