Dellums, sounding like the candidate he was when he first ran for office, challenged the residents to help him and the new police chief Anthony Batts “match last year’s 10% overall decrease in crime.” He said the citizens of Oakland, “ought to be able to exceed” the drop in crime it saw in 2009.
Borrowing a page from the Presidential State of the Union addresses, the Mayor acknowledged a formerly incarcerated resident and allowed him to address the public and tell how he had been helped by the Mayor’s office and the Oakland Private Industry Council in finding gainful employment.
The mayor reiterated his comprehensive anti-crime approach of Prevention, Intervention and Enforcement, along with the creation of more than 5,000 new jobs for Oaklanders (Putting Oaklanders to Work) as a way to help Oakland work better.
He listed more than a quarter of billion dollars in funds that his administration has received from county, state, federal and philanthropic sources. He pledged to increase the city’s support for the schools and to focus on hiring local teachers.
“Expect some more good news about our Oakland A’s soon, too”, he said.
