Between the panels, CBM will host its annual Newsmakers Luncheon honoring three key leaders throughout the state. During the luncheon, a special guest appearance will be made by Speaker Emeritus Karen Bass. Honorees of this year’s newsmaker award include Alice Huffman, President of the California NAACP, Aubry Stone, President of the California Black Chamber of Commerce and Jerome Horton, Vice-Chair of the Board of Equalization.
Aubry Stone is the President of the California Black Chamber of Commerce (CBCC), an organization that promotes economic development through business creation, growth and sustainability. He is also the Director of the California Black Chamber Foundation, an organization that is dedicated to the education of African American youth and young adults.
Appointed by the Governor, Mr. Stone currently serves as a California Commissioner for Economic Development. He aggressively led the California Black Chamber in such public policy issues as: Prop 187, co-authored the 9th circuit injunction against implementation of Prop 209, publicly advocated against Brown-fields, the urban environment, insurance redlining the inner city impact of bank acquisitions and mergers and leads the charge of new and emerging markets.
Alice Huffman is the President of the California NAACP. She began her tenure as President in January 2000. Under her leadership, the organization has accelerated into one of the most sought after organizations in California’s policy arena. Huffman is also President, and CEO of her consulting firm A.C. Public Affairs, Inc. (ACPA). ACPA is a California Corporation specializing in initiative campaigns, strategic public policy issues and grass roots organizing.
Huffman, is an appointee of Governor Swarzenegger’s to the State Parks and Recreation Commission and the California Complete Count Committee for the 2010 Census. She is President of Future PAC, a National organization that supports the election of progressive African American women. She serves on the Board of the Center for Democratic Participation and is a member of the California Democratic Party Executive Committee and the Democratic National Committee. She also serves on the Help America Vote Advisory Committee and Wells Fargo Company Advisory Committee.
Jerome E. Horton is the Vice Chairperson of the California State Board of Equalization where he represents the 4th District comprised of over 8.5 million constituents in the Greater Los Angeles Area. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger made history when he appointed Mr. Horton to Board of Equalization. Mr. Horton became the first member of the Board of Equalization to have over twenty-two years of Board of Equalization experience protecting the rights of California taxpayers and fighting for fairness and equity in government.
Mr. Horton is the 1st African American to serve on the California State Board of Equalization and the 3rd African American Constitutional Officer to serve the Great State of California in this State's history. Prior to joining the Board of Equalization, Mr. Horton served in the California State Assembly and on the Inglewood City Council from 1996 to 2006.
